 Bass player Carles Benavent is a musician who is globally respected. His work with the guitarist Paco de Lucia was noticed by Miles Davis and Chick Corea and his recordings inspire many Spanish musicians who roam the roads of flamenco and jazz music.

Carles Benavent is widely known not only as a jazz flamenco bass player but also as the creator of the flamenco bass style itself. During his 25 years of collaboration with Paco de Lucia he forged that unique style of playing now widely recognized by the flamenco
bass community. What Jaco Pastorius became for the jazz style Carles Benavent became for the flamenco style.

 

 Touring the world he has also meet and played with big-name artists such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea and Gil Goldstein.

When Carles first asked me to make his new bass it was a big challenge for me to work with such a big artist. But he is a very friendly person so in a short time our collaboration not only expanded new boundaries of creativity for me but also made me the lucky listener of Carless art of playing. I´m very proud of this collaboration.

We were thinking a lot about the name for his new instrument. There were many options but mostly "Aigua" (Carles´s last solo album name) and especially "Mars Guitar" ;)
Story tells that in Carles Benavent´s early years with Paco de Lucia a lot of flamenco people never saw an electric bass because flamenco concerts were performed only with flamenco guitars. They called it "mars guitar" when they saw for the first time that strange instrument with only four thick strings.

" You know what?" said Carles to me just before the bass´s debut in Musikmesse 2004 show. "Let´s call it `Barcelona¨... " in the end it is where we both live "
